The Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Welcome Aboard for Your Special Day Out ...

Print PDF

Your visit to The Award-Winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway will engage, inspire and excite you ... The sight of powerful majestic steam engines, the charm of quiet rural stations, and the friendliness of traditionally uniformed staff, will leave you with some enduring memories of a special day out.

Trains run throughout the year - Daily from mid-June to mid-September, and on numerous days from mid-March to June and from mid-September to December. See our Timetables page for full details.

For the family and casual visitor, we offer a unique and exciting day out, as you step back to a bygone era when steam power was the order of the day. We are one of Britain’s Heritage Railways and a registered educational charity, but we’re also much more besides.

Take a Ride behind one of our vintage steam locomotives for a special journey back in time. Breathe in the evocative smells of a real steam railway, while your eyes and ears thrill to the puffing and hissing of the steam engine. Settle back in beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages and enjoy a unique view of some of the Island’s unspoilt countryside ... or hop off at one of our stations and just watch the trains go by!

A journey on the multi award-winning Isle of Wight Steam Railway is an unforgettable experience for all the senses.

At busier times we stage a myriad of special events when the steam trains provide the perfect centrepiece for us to put on something extra – From a ‘Day Out With Thomas’ to Santa Specials, there’s also a Wizard Week, music events, Wine and Real Ale Festivals, and a Steam and Country Summer Show!

The Isle of Wight once boasted 54 miles of railway, most of which was closed between 1952 and 1966. Happily, its unique atmosphere has been perfectly preserved by the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which has often been recognised with awards and commendations. We have three-times been named Independent Railway of the Year, and in 2004 we were honoured with a visit from The Queen.

Whenever you visit there's always plenty to see ...

The Railway Refreshment Rooms are ideal for Elevenses, Lunch and Afternoon Tea. Enjoy an ‘Engine Driver's Lunch’ or a ‘Shunter's Special’, cool down with a refreshing ice cream or spoil yourself with a selection of sumptuous cakes or a specially prepared cream tea.

Our locomotives and carriages have all been painstakingly restored to pristine condition and are the hallmark of our delightful railway. Our oldest locomotive was built in 1876 and carriages date back to 1864!

Our fascinating museum of Island railway history houses the smaller trappings of the Island’s railways, with signalling equipment, station signs, loco nameplates, tickets and a host of artefacts depicting a former way of life.

See heritage stock being restored in our Carriage and Wagon Workshop - a building opened by The Queen in 2004.

There's plenty of space for visitors to enjoy. Our large green open field is ideal for picnics, games, a gentle stroll or just relaxing … The youngsters can let off steam in the Children’s Play Area, and see if you can find the entrance to our hidden Woodland Walk!
