Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September

- A 40th Anniversary Event

Two Victorian Island Locomotives in Service Together!

As part of The Isle of Wight Steam Railway's 40th Anniversary season, a special weekend celebrating Island steam, with train services headed by locomotives with an Island pedigree!

The weekend will feature a two-train service with five locomotives in steam, two of which date from the Victorian era - the unique ‘O2’ locomotive No. 24 ‘Calbourne’ and former Island ‘Terrier’ locomotive No.8 ‘Freshwater’. Double-headed trains and mixed livery trains are also planned!

A special timetable will be in operation and each day will feature 'The Grand Cavalcade' of railway vehicles large and small, historic and modern, which can be viewed from the Havenstreet Station yard and platform, or, for a panoramic view, from the Railway's nearby 'Barn Field'.

To complete the weekend there will be a full range of refreshments, a real ale bar, stalls and displays, plus the opportunity to visit our workshops.

The Trains

No. 24 ‘Calbourne’, resplendent in early British Railways lined black livery, will head a train of former London Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) and South-Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR) bogie coaches, recreating a typicalIsland railway scene from half a century ago. Meanwhile, the Steam Railway’s oldest locomotive, the 1876-built ‘Terrier’ class engine No.8 ‘Freshwater’ will head a train of Victorian four-wheeled coaches recreating a typical Southern Railway scene from the inter-war years.

Other locomotives expected to be in steam will be the 1918 former industrial locomotive No. 38 'Ajax', and one of the Railway's two former Army locomotives - Hunslet Austerity No. 192 'Waggoner'.

The two-train service will enable visitors to ride behind two different trains both of which will comprise only former Island railway coaching stock, including one featuring coaches in mixed liveries. Subject to timetabling, there may also be a special working of the IW Steam Railway's unique 'push-pull' set with Locomotive No.8 'Freshwater'.
