Join us on a walk to commemorate the closure of the Shanklin to Ventnor section of railway on 18th April 1966. We follow as closely as possible the former trackbed from Shanklin, through Wroxall, to the north portal of Ventnor tunnel. Unfortunately, permission to walk through the tunnel cannot be obtained, so we climb over the downs, viewing the spoil heaps and air shaft on the way and enjoying the ‘classic’ viewpoint of Ventnor station from high above before descending to the old station site.

Along the way, various remains of the former railway may be seen; the major items are bridges, but track drains and fencing are still to be found. There will be the opportunity to take photographs and enjoy the views and please feel free to ask questions as we go along - walk leaders will do their best to answer.

Participants undertake this walk entirely at their own risk and that neither the Isle of Wight Steam Railway or the walk leaders can be held responsible for any incidents to individuals. The climb over the downs involves a short, very steep section on the way up, also a steep descent near the end. There is no charge for this walk although donations to the IW Steam Railway will be invited.

Meet at Shanklin Station 10.15am.
Distance 4.5 miles.
Time 3.5 hours.

Good walking boots or stout shoes and appropriate clothing. Bring snack lunch. Catch bus back from Ventnor to Shanklin Station. Walk at own risk.
