Telegraph Pole Recreation Project

Railway Engages with BT in Telegraph Pole Recreation Initiative

Telegraph poles and wires were once a common sight alongside railway lines. As communication and signalling methods advanced, these features have all but disappeared from the national railway network. With the support of British Telecom, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway has started a project that will see the return of this once traditional feature the full five mile length of the line.

For the IWSR to explain the project and to thank BT for the magnificent donation of used, but entirely suitable telegraph poles and related items, a group of BT managers visited the Railway on 17 December.

The project was initially hatched by our volunteer driver and engineer, Steve Smart who, in his working life is employed by BT.
