Carriage & Wagon News - December 2015

LCDR 5 compartment Brake Third 4115

The partially restored underframe of 4115 is currently in Train Story, where it is being used as the accommodation underframe for SECR Saloon Composite 6375’s body.

LBSCR 3 Compartment Brake Third 4115

Pete Jardine and his team are making rapid and visible progress with 4115, our current 4-wheel carriage restoration project.

The majority of the fixed window glass is now in, including the Brake end windows, all the fixed windows on the North side and all but one compartment on the south side. Work is continuing on building the new droplights.

All picture/advert frames have been made and three fitted to date. The varnishing of interior woodwork has been started.

The external ends are now in their first black undercoat and the gutters have been made but not yet fitted. The roof has been scraped ready for the canvas covering to be fitted.

The Guard’s van parcel shelf has been fitted.

SECR 4 Compartment Brake third 4149 - Bogies

The first bogie has had corner spring hangers riveted on, Dave Smart and Gary Walker are now ready to start riveting the inner frame parts. This has to be done by a combination of hydraulic and pneumatic riveting, so that bogie frame is now next to the C&W Workshop doors so that it can be pushed outside for the pneumatic riveting when the weather permits. The other bogie has been set up for hydraulic riveting of the corner spring hanger plates.

The underframe is with Bartletts in Wales for the fitting of new solebars and headstocks.

SECR Saloon Composite 6375

As mentioned above, the body is on LCDR 4115’s underframe currently in Train Story.

The underframe is currently over the C&W Workshop inspection pit and has been stripped by the Destructors (Graham Redfern, Andy Tavener, Jim Ruler and Phil Mair). The bogies have been taken out in turn to be assessed. The general condition of the underframe is rather better than 4149, requiring only the headstocks and solebars to be changed. The bogies are better too, except for the corner spring hanger brackets. We are currently reviewing the options for contracting for this work to be carried out as we wish to have this coach back in service by the middle of next year, the operating department need the seating capacity that this coach provides during 2016 high season.

'The Destructors' have cleaned and stripped the underframe.

PMV 1350

The new floor has been installed by the Destructors, aided by our C&W apprentice Callum Culver, the interior is being painted white to give maximum light reflection.

1350 will shortly be fitted with lighting, with work scheduled to start during the second week in December. The next stage will then be to fit it out with racking for the storage of our stock of fixings - nuts and bolts etc.

LBSCR 10-ton Coal Wagons 27766 & 28345

The first of the wagons, 27766, is now outside the workshop under a the protection of a tarpaulin sheet. 28345 is in the C&W workshop, nearly up to the same stage of completion.

We are still waiting for the side springs and the knee brackets to finish the bodies. As usual, John James is champing at the bit to get them completed!

Inside the workshop, John James and his team have brought LBSCR 28345 up to the same stage as 27766.

Winter carriage varnishing programme

4-Wheel Carriages

In addition to the work reported on last month, Steve Rowntree and his team have been working wonders. NLR 4 Compartment Composite 6336, LBSCR 5 Compartment Third 2343, LCDR 5 Compartment Third 2515 and LCDR Saloon Composite 4112 have all been re-varnished and their roofs re-painted.

LCDR Saloon Composite Third 6369 is now in the workshop for a complete re-paint, including the roof.

Once work is complete, the carriages are returned to Train Story for winter storage and exhibition.

Bogie Carriages

After Santa Specials duty, LBSCR 9 Compartment Third 2416 will move into the workshop for a full re-paint. All the other bogie coaches will be in for their winter re-varnish, so Steve and his team will be very busy for a while yet!

Other News

The split spoke wagon wheelsets and other wagon spares purchased from the North Norfolk Railway mentioned last month are gradually been re-painted. The repainted wheels have been moved to the wheel storage area at the side of Train Story, with the remainder going into the barn for dry storage.

PMV 1046 had an A exam, a problem with the air-brake system was identified but has not yet been resolved.  1046 is currently forming part of the North Pole Express, delivering Christmas parcels to Havenstreet Station during the Santa Special event.
