Ivatt 41298 Ready to Steam!

A significant milestone in the overhaul of Ivatt Class 2 Tank 41298 was reached today, Tuesday 19th August 2014, at Havenstreet when a fire was put into the firebox for the first time since it was preserved in 1967.  If all goes to plan, the railway’s boiler inspector will be visiting Havenstreet tomorrow to carry out a full in-steam assessment of the boiler.

41298 is brought gently into steam outside the Mechanical Engineering Workshop today, 19th August 2014.  Overhaul project leader Len Pullinger is on the footplate.
41298 was purchased from straight from British Railways service in 1967 by the Ivatt Locomotive Trust.  Based at Quainton Road, Buckinghamshire, for many years, the locomotive was moved to the Isle of Wight in 2008.  In 2009 The Ivatt Locomotive Trust generously transferred ownership of 41298 and their other locomotives to The Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Work to bring 41298 into passenger service is now continuing in the Havenstreet Mechanical Engineering Workshop.

Although 41298’s steam test is undoubtedly a major milestone on the road to completion, there still remains much work to be done before it will be ready to enter passenger service.  A firm date for 41298’s first passenger train has yet to be set by the railway.
