Ivatt 41313 Overhaul News

A recent visit to the East Somerset Railway by members of the IWSR’s engineering department gave the opportunity to view progress on the overhaul of Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T 41313.

41313 has been at the East Somerset’s Cranmore workshop since February 2015, where it is being restored to working order under contract.  The work is expected to take 2 years to complete, so a return to steam sometime during 2017 is a possibility.  The IWSR’s Ivatt 2-6-0 tender locomotive 46447 was also restored at Cranmore, where it is now on a ten-year loan and in regular passenger service.

The engineering team at Cranmore are making rapid progress on  41313’s restoration, with three working days in each week devoted to the project.  The pictures on this page were taken on 17th December 2015 when members of the IWSR’s mechanical engineering team were at Cranmore to deliver parts for use in the repairs.  More pictures of 41313’s restoration can be seen on the East Somerset Railway’s regularly updated picture gallery.

Smoke and Superheater tubes have been removed from the boiler, which is now being prepared for non destructive testing.

Ivatt Locomotive Appeal

The restoration of 41313 will cost £145,000.  We are fortunate in that we have been able to source £100,000 of the total, mainly from a very generous legacy, but urgently need to raise the remaining £45,000 to complete the restoration.

As at December 2015 the appeal is already over half way to its target of £45,000, thanks to everyone who has helped so far!  More financial assistance is needed to help to bring this wonderful locomotive back into steam, so all donations will be very welcome.

Please visit 41313’s appeal page for more information about how you can help to get her back in action.

Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T 41298

Meanwhile, back at Havenstreet, the overhaul of sister Ivatt 2-6-2T 41298 was completed by late summer 2015.

In September, following a series of test steamings, 41298 was moved into storage in Train Story to await a formal return to passenger service during 2016.  Details will be published on this website as soon as they are confirmed.
