Ivatt tank engine makes history on the Isle of Wight

Early risers and dog walkers in the vicinity of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's line between Wootton and Smallbrook on Monday 6th July may be forgiven for thinking they had been transported back to the 1960's in a parallel universe; one where the planned transfer of Ivatt 2-6-2T engines to replace ageing 02's actually occurred.

A glimpse of what might have been was created when locomotive 41298 hauled a test train of four LBSCR bogie coaches throughout the length of the steam railway to prove the efficiency of the air braking system that was added to the locomotive to make it compatible with Island rolling stock.

Further test runs are to be carried out in coming weeks to enable crew training and familiarisation to take place prior to 41298 entering service.
