LBSCR 2416 back after major repairs

1916-built London, Brighton and South Coast Railway 9 Compartment Third 2416 was taken for a post-overhaul test trip on the Isle Wight Steam Railway on 5th March 2015. This milestone marked the completion of an 8-month major underframe repair project.

LBSCR 2416 heads for Wootton during the 5th March 2015 test running.
During a ‘B’ exam carried out on the 8th July 2014 it was noticed that existing areas of corrosion on the underframe had significantly worsened.  Although the busiest period of the operating season was in full swing, there was no alternative but to withdraw the coach for the urgently needed repairs.

The return to service of this high capacity coach instantly became the main focus of the Carriage & Wagon team; a plan to carry out the necessary repairs was rapidly formulated, work started within a month with the body being removed in August. Further assessment revealed that new headstocks were required, along with a whole host of other remedial work. Although corrosion is inevitable in railway vehicles of this age (2416 will be one hundred years old next year!), the problem has been aggravated by years of service on a route that included daily exposure to salt water during journeys along Ryde Pier.

Work in progress - September 2014.
After four months of concentrated effort by the Carriage & Wagon team, the repairs were completed and the underframe reunited with the body on 3rd December 2014.

The trial run on 5th March followed completion of final brake and underframe work as well as ’normal’ winter maintenance, which this year included re-varnishing of the paintwork and the reupholstering of all 9 compartments.
