New Engineering Manager in post

Experienced railway engineer and former London Underground project manager David Savill has been appointed to the new full-time post of Engineering Manager. David took up his new post in early March. The creation of the Engineering Manager role reflects a major review and re-organisation of the Mechanical Engineering Department instigated by former CME Len Pullinger. Len remains very much part of the team in a new role as Locomotive Support Manager, which will see him work much more closely on mechanical repairs and heavy overhauls. The restructure also gives C&W Supervisor Gary Walker greater responsibility for leading the C&W team.
Locomotive Cleaners Course – Saturday 5th June 2010
A one-day induction course for aspiring Enginemen (and women!) will take place at Havenstreet on Saturday 5th June 2010. The course is aimed at new entrants to the department and existing cleaners who have been with us for a short while. The training will cover a number of topics, including the practical aspects of locomotive cleaning and an explanation of the procedures for preparing, operating and disposing of locomotives. There will also be a session dealing with workplace safety and the railway operating rules that apply to locomotive cleaners.
Tony Barry is the lead for this training course, existing volunteers should contact him to reserve a place. Tony’s telephone number can be found on posters advertising the course which are now displayed on the staff notice boards at Havenstreet and also on the IWSR Ops website, or you can reach him by E Mail This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. This course is an excellent opportunity for those wishing to get involved with the operating and maintenance of our historic fleet of locomotives and is an essential first step for volunteers that are looking to start a career on the footplate.

D2059 entered works on 24 February 2010 for assessment and overhaul and much work has been undertaken. A broken piston has been replaced and a new liner fitted. The fuel pump was reconditioned and the timing reset. An overhaul of the injectors was carried out and the inlet and exhaust valves have been reseated. The opportunity was taken to carry out an oil and filter change. A pre-heater has been fitted for the coolant system and a radiator blind has been manufactured. The engine was started up for testing over the Easter week, leading to D2059 taking part in a shunt at Havenstreet on Friday 9th April. Whilst in works the opportunity is being taken to tidy up bodywork and carry out a repaint, with much of the preparation and finishing being done by Stuart Butt. The project has been led by John Hocknull, assisted by Les Morgan, Mike Brittan, Stuart Butt, Dave Smart and others.
