May Spring Gala News Update

Plans for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway Spring Gala over the late May Bank Holiday weekend 27th to 29th May are well progressed. This is the opportunity for our Railway to bring out and show as much of our rolling stock as possible.

In steam and operation will be Ivatt 41298 together with our 2 Island Terriers W11 ‘Newport’ and W8 ‘Freshwater’.

Despite all best efforts, our flagship LSWR Adams 02 Class No.24 ‘Calbourne’ will not be available for this event. Extensive work to the regulator is still ongoing and we must conclude that it will not be completed in time for the Gala. However there will be opportunities to tour the workshop and get up close to see ‘Calbourne’ and discover how the repair work is progressing.

The many Spring Gala highlights will include (subject to availability on the day) :-

- An intense passenger service
- Brake van rides into the sidings adjacent to Train Story
- The Terriers double heading
- An opportunity to see the push/pull set in operation with a Terrier.
A recreation of the service that ran from Merstone to Ventnor West.
- A photographic display of the push/pull on the Ventnor West line
- Workshop tours
- An opportunity to see the 4 year restoration of coach No. 4115 nearing completion.
Unfortunately, the coach will not be in service.
- Visit our £1.2million Train Story Discovery Centre.
- Display of artwork by the Island artist Ivan Berryman and an opportunity to meet him

The Spring Gala is a great opportunity to see exactly what is going on and is being achieved at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. A day not to be missed by anyone with an interest in Island Railways. The detailed timetable will shortly be available on the Railway website.
