Spring Gala 2017 Plans Announced

Following the success of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway Spring Gala in 2016 the event is back over the late May Bank Holiday weekend 27th to 29th May. All indications are we will have four locomotives in steam, this includes three with an Island pedigree – ‘Calbourne’, ‘Newport’ and ‘Freshwater’.

Our flagship LSWR Adams 02 Class No 24 ‘Calbourne’ will alternate with Ivatt Standard Class 2 41298 hauling our classic bogie coach set. The LBSCR Stroudly Terrier No 8 ‘Freshwater’ will work the 4- wheel vintage carriage set.
It is anticipated our newly restored London Brighton &  South Coast Railway 4 wheel brake coach No 4115 will enter service for the Gala. Assuming it is available then Terrier No 11 ‘Newport’ will operate a shuttle service into the siding with the Push/Pull set. This will be an accurate recreation of the train service that ran from Merstone to Ventnor West.

A highlight of the event will be in the afternoon when the push/pull set will be hauled on the full line for one return trip. Simultaneously the remainder of the 4 wheel coaches will form the other service train. We believe that this will be the first time two four wheel trains passenger trains have run together since the 1930s. The two 4 wheel trains will then combine and be hauled by the double headed terriers.

Please see the Isle of Wight Steam Railway website for up to date details along with the timetable for the day. Timetables have been extended so come early and stay late!
