'Team Terrier' back in action!

The necessity for significant repair work to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's 1876-built LBSCR A1x ‘Terrier’ locomotive W8 ‘Freshwater’ has resulted in the resurrection of our volunteer locomotive overhaul gang - ‘Team Terrier’

W8 started her 2015 operating season in July, following an extensive maintenance period which included a boiler re-tube and the fitting of a new regulator head.  Unfortunately, 'Freshwater's season was short lived as she was failed on the Monday morning of the August Bank Holiday Steam Show with an air leak around the brake cylinder.  Subsequent investigation revealed that the bracket holding the air brake cylinder to the frame had ‘let go’ due to corrosion.  It was realised that the affected area under the cab floor and bunker will need extensive repair work before ‘Freshwater’ can be passed fit for further service.

Mechanical Engineering Department Volunteer (and now IW Railway Company Director) Steve Smart realised that here was an opportunity for a revived ‘Team Terrier’, responsible for much of the work needed to bring sister 'Terrier' W11 back into service in 2014, to swing back into action and get stuck into the work needed to get ‘Freshwater’ back into traffic during the 2016 operating season.

'Team Terrier' members Chris Parrish (left) and Peter Hull heat up the brake actuating crank, expanding it in order to remove it from the brake shaft.
Mechanical Engineering Foreman Andy Summers has carried out a thorough assessment of the work that ‘Team Terrier’ will have to complete.  It was already known that W8 had received extensive repairs to the rear drag box/footplate areas whilst under Southern and British Railways ownership, these areas have been closely monitored by our engineering team since the locomotive arrived at Havenstreet in 1979.  Andy soon realised that now is the time to address the condition of this area of the locomotive.

The plan is for ‘Team Terrier’ to strip back all of the existing repairs, a bit like an archaeological dig, to reveal the original structure and then sensitively replace life-expired components.  Traditional techniques, such as hot riveting, will be used wherever possible.  The end product will be a historic locomotive that once again resembles the original LBSCR general arrangement drawings.  At the same time our mechanical engineering team, which now includes two apprentices, will be gaining valuable experience of the methods originally used to construct this 139 year old locomotive.

After heating, brute force was needed to persuade the crank to give up it's grip on the shaft.
‘Team Terrier’ will be in action on most Sundays during the coming months.  New members are always welcome to come along and join the team - there is much work to be done!  Existing IWSR volunteers should contact Steve Smart or Andy Summers at the works for details of the next ‘Team Terrier’ working days.

New volunteers should contact our Volunteer Coordinator for more information on joining the Mechanical Engineering team.
