Track Pack - January 2016

February Working Weekend - Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th

Rail changing is the order of the day for this weekend (!), as in January.

Between Woodhouse Crossing and the Long Curve there are three or four pairs of rails that have escaped the various rail changing exercises in the past. The plan is to exchange these for a quantity of the serviceable 60 foot rails purchased a couple of years ago and currently stored at Havenstreet. An added bonus of the scheme is it will remove a couple of fairly adjacent short closures in this area created by the aforementioned projects.

The rails are currently being prepared and will be moved to the site before the weekend, ready for us to get started on Saturday morning.

We are looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday and/or Sunday, as usual meeting at the P.Way hut for 8.30am, ready for the rail trip to the Woodhouse Crossing area.

What's Been Going On?

A worthy band gathered at Havenstreet on the Saturday morning of the January Working Weekend and were on their way to Swanpond by 5 to 9. On arrival a start was made on closing up the gaps created in the South rail by the previous week’s session of cutting and rota-broaching. With at least four people to operate each Ironman excellent progress was made through the morning. The lengths of 6 by 2 timber brought to act as a temporary rail proved their usefulness in helping reposition the rails.

By dinnertime the cut and drilled sections of the South rail were in their new positions and a start had been made on the North side. This worked out equally well during the afternoon with all the cut and drilled gaps closed up in time for a cup of tea at three.
The rain had stayed away till now, but it was a bit wet for the last hour or so while the final couple of rails were prepared ready to accept the new closure. A trip back to Havenstreet in the half light at ¼ to 5 completed the day.

With the smaller gang available on Sunday, and the job being a bit fiddlier, progress didn’t look as dramatic. However a good job was done with the last three rails cut, drilled and fitted back into the track. As on the South side, the closure for the North side was only cut once the rail gaps between it and the Single Line point at Smallbrook had been reset to the correct value. By the end of the weekend there was once again a continuous pair of rails extending from Havenstreet to Smallbrook.

What Else Has Been Going On?

With the rail cropping finished so speedily a start could be made on Monday morning re-spacing the sleepers at the new joint positions. With up to three or four sleepers to be attended to at each joint this took a little time but was completed by mid-week. A dozen new softwood sleepers were used to either replace any suspect ones in the new position or limit the number to be moved to correct the spacing.

With the Swanpond area track back together, bar a bit of lifting and packing, efforts turned to the West End Signalling project. 2A Points has had most of its insulated fittings installed to enable track circuit “F” to be extended, and a start has been made on fitting out the Up Outer Home Signal post. A particularly wet Wednesday (the 27th) proved useful for continuing with the interior Signal Box wiring. The Down Advanced Signal Post still awaits it moment of glory around the back of the Storage Shed.

The waterlogged lineside prevents the Friday Gang making too much progress with their machinery. They are however making good progress disposing of the assorted piles of brash where the track passes through a wooded area.

As some of you may know our Guernsey member, Robin Tagart has had a few health issues recently. I am sure you would all join us here in wishing him a speedy recovery.
