1940s WEEKEND PHOTO REPORT PART 2

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway's 2007 '1940s Weekend' took place over the weekend of 30th June and 1st July. The pictures on this page have all been provided by Anthony Hobbs and were taken on the Sunday of the event. Havenstreet Station was brimming with renactors decked out in authentic 1940s style and with visitors enjoying the spectacle. Despite the often damp weather conditions morale remained high as the programmed activities, including displays of 1940s dancing and Air Raid Precautions, were able to continue with few interruptions. When rain did stop play, the Real Ale Bar provided a welcome haven for many!

The two locomotives hauling the 1940s train services both have a military pedigree; Hunslet 'Austerity' WD192 'Waggoner' was constructed for the Army and worked at, amongst other locations, the Longmoor Military Railway. 1918-built Barclay 0-6-0T 'Ajax' was requisitioned on completion by the Ministry of Munitions and sent to Persia where she remained for many years. More details of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's historic locomotive fleet can be found HERE.

W38 'Ajax' hauled the freight trains, ensuring that vital war supplies reached the front line!
WD192 'Waggoner' was kept busy with frequent troop trains, seen at Deacons Lane, Ashey (above) and Wootton (below).
