'Royal Engineer's Boiler Overhaul Makes Rapid Progress

The boiler of Hunstlet 'Austerity' No. WD198 'Royal Engineer', owned by the National Army Museum and on long-term loan to the IWSR along with sister engine WD192 'Waggoner' and Barclay 0-4-0 diesel No.235, left the Isle of Wight for overhaul in February 2007. The work is being carried out at South Coast Steam workshops, Portland, Dorset and includes the renewal of all crown stays and foundation rivets. These pictures, taken at the end of March 20007, illustrate the rapid progress that is now being made.

'Royal Engineer' was withdrawn from IWSR service in early 2006 following the discovery that some firebox crown stays were in poor condition. WD198's place on the IWSR locomotive roster has been taken by sister engine WD192 'Waggoner', returned to steam at Havenstreet in 2006. Full details of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's locomotive fleet can be seen on the Locomotives pages. Restoration and repair updates can be found HERE.
