BOOK LAUNCH AT HAVENSTREET

A book celebrating the birth and development of railway preservation on the Isle of Wight was launched at Havenstreet Station on Sunday 26th May 2007. 'The Isle of Wight Railway - 40 years of preservation', written by long standing railway members Dave Walker and Terry Hastings, charts the story from the struggle to preserve something of the Island's railway history at the end of steam in 1966, through the establishing of an operating base at Havenstreet and on to the development and operation of the present day Wootton to Smallbrook Junction line.

The warts-and-all story is told in entertaining detail and illustrated by numerous previously unseen pictures of the railway, many taken 'behind the scenes', and gives a fascinating insight into the hard work and sheer determination that has been necessary to get the Isle of Wight Steam Railway to it's current situation as one of the most admired heritage railways in the country. The Havenstreet launch party was attended by many members of the railway both old and new. Special guests were founder members Ron Strutt and David Perry, key figures in establishing the Wight Locomotive Society and starting an appeal to purchase one of the Island 'O2' tank engines for static display which proved to be the genesis of the current day steam railway. Another of the founders, Iain Whitlam, was also briefly present before returning to his duties in the Havenstreet signal box!

'The Isle of Wight Steam Railway - 40 years of preservation' is part of the 'Nostalgia Road' series and is available from The Railway Shop, Havenstreet Station, Isle of Wight, PO33 4DS (or call 01983 885923) at a cost of £9.95 + £2.00 P&P.
