'CALBOURNE' BOILER UPDATE - MARCH 2008

Extensive repairs to the boiler of 1891-built London & South Western Railway 02 Class No.W24 'Calbourne' are continuing at the London & North Western Railway Works. Isle of Wight Steam Railway CME Len Pullinger visited Crewe earlier this month to review the progress made since his last trip north in September 2007. He reports that the new copper firebox door plate is now complete and the two new inner firebox copper half sides are welded to the original firebox crown. The new boiler barrel has been riveted to the original outer firebox and the stay holes rebushed ready to receive the rebuilt inner firebox.

A successful application to the Heritage lottery fund and previous fund-raising means that more than £90,000 has already been raised towards the final estimated cost of the work - £150,000. The additional work required has brought extra costs, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's 'Calbourne Boiler Appeal', which aims to raise the necessary matched funding, remains open with all contributions gratefully received. Details can be found HERE.
