EVACUEES WEEK

Isle of Wight Steam Railway visitors during the last week in June may have been a little concerned to see many children in 1940s costume apparently being evacuated by special train from Havenstreet Station. The Railway had been joined by Carisbrooke Castle Museum in organising a Living History week to recreate the experiences of Island children during World War Two, schools from all over the Island were invited to partake and over 600 children visited the Railway during the course of the week.

On arrival at Havenstreet they were met by 'Miss Barker' who explained to them that they were being evacuated to the country for their own safety, they then travelled by special train to Smallbrook and back and were then divided into groups to take part in three different activities. In the Waiting Room they played wartime games such as marbles and hopscotch and viewed a a display of 1940's toys. They then moved to the presentation room which housed two activities; In the Schoolroom Mr Grant the teacher marched the children to the Air Raid Shelter at the sound of the siren. There was also a demonstration of Food Rationing and a chance to view our1940s lounge and kitchen with many artefacts from the period.

All of the children and teachers were dressed in period costume, carrying their home made Gas Mask boxes. We received many favourable comments from our ordinary visitors who enjoyed watching the various activities taking place. Each day we had over 100 children participating and it is hoped that we can repeat such an event another year. A video report of the Evacuees Week can be seen on the BBC News website.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway continues the WW2 theme over the weekend of 4th and 5th of July when our popular 1940s event takes place. Havenstreet Station will be the venue for numerous displays recreating life on the Isle of Wight during the wartime period. An intensive two train steam passenger service will be operating along with demonstation goods trains. For full details visit the Special Events Page.
