First 'Santa Special' of 2006 - Winter Steam Services Underway

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway's winter operating season got underway on Sunday 3rd December when Hunslet 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST No.WD192 'Waggoner' hauled the first Santa Special of 2006. Passengers arriving from the Island at Havenstreet and the mainland via Smallbrook Junction were taken on an 11-mile round trip to meet Santa, installed in his Havenstreet Grotto. 'Santa Specials' will be running on dates throughout December with the last trains being on Christmas Eve. The trains have become a highly popular annual event, booking is highly advisable.

This is 'Waggoner's first winter season in service on the IWSR. She moved to Havenstreet in February 2005 following the closure of the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, East Yorkshire and following a rapid overhaul was steamed for the first time in almost 22 years during May 2006, entering passenger service shortly afterwards.

In addition to the pre-christmas 'Santa Special's there will be the traditional 'Mince Pie Specials' on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th December. While you're still in the Christmas mood, take a train ride with us, sit back, relax and enjoy the Island's winter scenery, we will do the driving! Every adult will receive seasonal refreshments and there are goodies for the kids.

On New Year's Eve join us to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the end of British Railways steam on the Isle of Wight. Both 1876-built 'Terrier' W8 'Freshwater' and 'Austerity' WD192 'Waggoner' will be in steam on the day, 'Waggoner' will be taking care of the service trains and 'Freshwater' will be hauling a IW Rly Co Members Only Anniversary Special.

The final trains of the winter season will be the 'Hangover Specials' on New Year's Day. Once again WD192 'Waggoner' will be in charge of these popular holiday trains.
