The Isle of Wight Steam Railway's winter operating season got underway on Sunday 3rd December when Hunslet 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST No.WD192 'Waggoner' hauled the first Santa Special of 2006. Passengers arriving from the Island at Havenstreet and the mainland via Smallbrook Junction were taken on an 11-mile round trip to meet Santa, installed in his Havenstreet Grotto. 'Santa Specials' will be running on dates throughout December with the last trains being on Christmas Eve. The trains have become a highly popular annual event, booking is highly advisable.
This is 'Waggoner's first winter season in service on the IWSR. She moved to Havenstreet in February 2005 following the closure of the Museum of Army Transport in Beverley, East Yorkshire and following a rapid overhaul was steamed for the first time in almost 22 years during May 2006, entering passenger service shortly afterwards.
