Congratulations to Clive Miller and Theo Lloyd who
have passed out as Passenger Guards. After a season of hard work involving both
practical and theoretical training both have attained that coveted position. The
job involves more than waving a green flag. Practical work involves coupling up,
shunting, and working all the ground frames. Those steam heat pipes can be the
very devil to connect up quickly. In addition there is the knowledge of the rules
and regulations. What happens when a train fails in section? What should the Guard
do if they hear the driver give three short blasts on the engine whistle? All
the answers can be found in the little blue book - that all our operating staff
are issued with. Guards are also the public face of the railway for our passengers.
They need to look after them - show them to their compartments, help with wheel
chair access, taking those buggies in the brake van, putting up 'reservation notices'
for coach parties and be able to answer all manner of questions. Yes, there is
much more to do than just wave the green flag
