Volunteer and Members Day

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway 's Volunteers and Members Day was held at Havenstreet Station on Saturday 18th March 2006. A special train service operated for the benefit of the large contingent of members and their families attending the event. Although W38 'Ajax' had been rostered to haul the trains the locomotive was unfortunately unavailable due to a faulty mudhole door joint which only became apparent during a test steaming a few days earlier, leaving W37 'Invincible' to step into the breach. Two full round trips of the line were made along with an opportunity for members to take a trip into Griffin's Field Sidings on board the recently overhauled 'Shark' Brake Van.

General Manager Peter Vail addresses the Volunteers Meeting.

At the Volunteers Meeting Isle of Wight Steam Railway Chairman John Suggett introduced General Manager Peter Vail and the Heads of Departments who all gave an update on progress in their areas of responsibility. After the meeting a number of those present took advantage of guided tours of the Mechanical Engineering and Carriage and Wagon Workshops.

'Invincible' was in charge of the Brake Van Rides.
The day concluded with an evening social in the 'Calbourne Room', the recently completed extension to Granny Winter's Pantry. The new catering team provided an excellent evening meal which was followed by a quiz night hosted by Summer Steam Show Chairman Steve Oates. Eight teams took part in the hotly contested competition but eventually the 'P Way Plonkers', led by P Way Manager Dave Walker, triumphed. Following the success of the quiz night it is now intended to hold similar socials on a monthly basis - keep your eyes on this website for more details!
