'Waggoner' Returns to Steam

'Austerity' 0-6-0ST No.WD192 'Waggoner' has been returned to steam only fifteen months after arriving on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. The National Army Museum owned locomotive, last steamed in 1984, was placed on loan to the IWSR following the closure of the Museum of Army Transport at Beverley in East Yorkshire where she had been a static exhibit for over twenty years. 'Waggoner' was found to be in excellent condition on arrival at Havenstreet. The work necessary to return her to operational service involved exposing the boiler for a thorough inspection followed by re-tubing and the fitting of Westinghouse Air Brake equipment. WD192 received a clean bill of health from the boiler inspector on 17th May 2006.

'Waggoner' will haul her first IWSR passenger trains on Saturday, 27th May 2006 during the railway's Spring Gala - the 'Works Outing' weekend. A ceremony at Havenstreet Station to officially mark her loan from the National Army Museum will take place at 12.00pm with representatives of the Museum and the former Army Railway Organisation present for the occasion.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is now home to three National Army Museum locomotives: 'Waggoner', sister engine WD198 'Royal Engineer' and Barclay 0-4-0 diesel mechanical shunter No.235. 'Waggoner' and No.235 are currently in working order, 'Royal Engineer' was withdrawn from service earlier this year pending firebox repairs.
