46447's First Train!

46447 first train 2
Sunday 26th October 2014 and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway's Ivatt Class 2MT 46447 gets away from Cranmore Station with her first passenger train since 1966, a break of 48 years out of service!

Today on the East Somerset Railway, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s Ivatt 2MT tender locomotive No.46447 hauled its first passenger train since December 1966.  The locomotive has been overhauled in the ESR’s workshops at Cranmore and will now remain on loan in Somerset  for a period of 10 years.

IWSR Chairman Steve Oates, with ESR Chairman Dick Masters to his right, addresses the substantial crowd gathered to celebrate 46447's return to traffic.  His speech included the unexpected announcement that sister Ivatt Class 2 41313 will soon be following 46447 across the Solent to Cranmore for overhaul.
To mark 46447’s official entry into service, the Chairmen of both railway companies, Steve Oates of the IWSR and Dick Masters of the ESR, made brief speeches praising all involved on both sides of the Solent who had worked so hard to get 46447 back on the road.  Also singled out for praise were the former trustees of the Ivatt Locomotive Trust, Peter Clarke and Roy Miller, who saved three Ivatt Class 2s for preservation more than 40 years ago.

46447’s return to service is part of a deal which also saw the last remaining LBSCR E1 class 0-6-0T locomotive, built in March 1877 as LBSCR No.110 ‘Burgundy’ but now known as W2 ‘Yarmouth’, pass into the ownership of the IWSR.

This splendid example of mutual cooperation between heritage railways has seen 46447, unsuitable for service on the IWSR due to its length and therefore a low priority for overhaul at Havenstreet, back in steam and the E1 moved to a far more appropriate home on the Island where it too will be returned to steam.

Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T 41313, currently on display in Train Story at Havenstreet Station, will soon be heading to Somerset to follow 46447 into the ESR's Cranmore Workshops for overhaul.
IWSR Chairman Steve Oates also made the surprise announcement that 46447 will be followed into Cranmore Works by the IWSR’s remaining non-operational Ivatt Class 2, 41313.  The two railways have come to an agreement that will see 41313 cross the Solent and move to Somerset for a full overhaul.
