Carriage & Wagon News - May 2016

LBSCR 3 Compartment Brake Third 4115

Considerable progress has been made since the last web update in February. The current state of the end compartment is ceiling in gloss, Scumbling up to second varnish, door jamb trims fitted.

The middle compartment ceiling is in undercoat, scumble to undercoat, and one door jamb trim fitted. The final door is still in progress, once it is final fitted the rest of the compartment can be fitted out.

The third compartment has its ceiling in gloss, Scumbling almost ready to start, both door jamb trims fitted.

Continuing with the compartments, the holes needed for the heater feeds and drains are done and three of the six seat backs are up to their basic frames. The communication cord gear is ready for fitting once the scumbling is complete.

The north side exterior is up to its second gloss, with all door bump stops fitted, door handles fitted with ferrules, destination brackets fitted and the first grab handle polished and fitted.

In the guard's compartment the internal door locking bars and handles are installed and a start has been made applying the dark green, it may well end up being darker though, and the Emergency tool cupboard  and electrical switch box are being prepared.

SECR 4 Compartment Brake third 4149

Both bogies are now finished! At one stage it seemed that we would never get past the stage of finding more and more that required attention. It appears that our contractors have done some work on the underframe, but no firm delivery date is forth coming.

SECR Saloon Composite 6375

The late completion of the first SECR underframe has had a massive impact on the original intention to have 6375 back in service for this summer. We were expecting to have 2 repaired SECR underframe to cope with at the moment, but we unfortunately do not have any at all. So much for our plans!

Winter carriage varnishing programme

The annual carriage body work repair and re-varnishing programme has continued into the 2016 running season, the majority of the passenger carrying fleet are now ready for another year of hard work.

LBSCR 6349 is still in the workshop receiving attention, it will be back in the running set in the near future.  It was intended to complete a full repaint of LBSCR 2416 but unfortunately we have no time left to be able to do anything with it this year. Next winter it must have a full repaint or it will end up being sidelined. We have also discovered that the roof canvas is also in a very poor state and will need replacing next winter.

The pictures below give an impression of the high standard of work achieved by the carriage bodywork team.
A full repaint of LCDR 6369 was completed in time for the 4-wheel sets first outing of the season.  A superb job by Steve and his team.
LBSCR Brake Third 4168 was needed for the first weekend of the season, which we were just able to achieve! A full re-varnish and a roof repaint.
LBSCR 2403 has also had an annual re-varnish and the roof repainted.
LBSCR 6349 is currently in the workshop for its annual re-varnish, this is turning out to be a bigger job with many galvanised panels needing a full repaint. Interestingly, every panel that has been stripped off had many layers of green paint under its current BR Crimson. The roof canvas has been found to be in a very poor state, it will require replacement next winter.

LBSCR 10-ton Coal Wagon 27766

The work to complete the second LBSCR 10-ton coal wagon has gone in fits and starts due to the late delivery from our contractor of the final knee brackets. We now have received and fitted 3 of the 4 knee brackets on 27766 and the sign writing is progressing as each section is completed. A very frustrating situation.

Other News

4-wheelers LBSCR 2343 and LCDR 2515 have had a number of air brake components changed to bring them in line with the recommended Westinghouse practice. Tests have shown that we should have a considerable reduction in the number of wheel flats. It also has the added benefit that they can now run with the bogie coaches without incurring wheel flats, all coaches in the set will now have compatible braking characteristics.

Our apprentice Callum Culver has extended and repaired the steps that will afford us easier access to our Nut and Bolt stores van.

Join The Team

New volunteers are made very welcome in C&W. We always try and fit your skills or desires with appropriate tasks and it goes without saying that the more volunteers we have, the more restoration and maintenance can be done to the IWSR rolling stock. So if your interests are in carriages or wagons (we have a dedicated team for these) and you're are interested in becoming a volunteer then please contact the railway’s Volunteer Coordinator and arrange to pay us a visit.

Keep in touch with C&W

We may work on equipment from the age of steam but our methods of communication are bang up to date!

C&W team member Derek Atkins has created an (unofficial) Facebook page which carries the latest information about progress in the C&W workshop, called  IWSR C&W Happenings.  There is now a further Facebook page featuring progress on the SECR Carriages Appeal Project.

In addition, C&W Supervisor Gary Walker has a frequently updated Flickr site, carrying plenty of recent pictures of C&W activity.
